What is the connection of Scallop Shells in Catholicism?

The scallop shell is one of the most recognizable symbols in the Catholic Church. It represents the spiritual journey of life as a pilgrimage and the "living waters" of rebirth in baptism. The long grooves of the shell that come to a single point symbolize the many paths toward God. They are all straight, and the road narrows the closer you get to the end. God loves us so much, that he gave us free will to live our lives as we wish. Many of us choose crooked paths, then by the grace of God, realize we must straighten things out to get back on the path God had planned for us.
