The squares on a scapular are simply called scapulars, panels, or badges. They are made of 100% woven wool and are joined by two cords or strings so that one square rests on the chest and the other on the back.
The term "scapular" originates from the Latin word scapula, meaning "shoulder blade". This Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most commonly worn type, but there are several other variation.
